A fragrance is not a single, fixed smell. It is a composition that changes over time, and that change is usually described in three stages: top notes, heart notes and base notes. Understanding the stages helps you describe what you like — and helps you judge a fragrance fairly when you try it.
Top notes: the first impression
Top notes are usually the first impression — the opening you notice first after applying. They tend to be lighter and more immediate than the rest of the composition. They set the tone, but they are rarely the fragrance’s destination.
This is the stage most people smell when they test a fragrance in a shop. It is also the stage that misleads the most people.
Heart notes: the character
As the opening settles, the heart of the fragrance becomes more noticeable. This is usually where the composition’s character lives — the part that often carries it through its central phase. When someone says a fragrance “feels like them,” they are usually describing the heart.
Base notes: the deeper part
Base notes form the deeper part of the fragrance and can remain after the opening notes fade. They often include the richer, slower materials in a composition. In a rich composition, the base can be where the fragrance shows how it was built, though every formula behaves differently.
You notice a fragrance for its opening. You keep it for its base.
Why the opening can mislead
Judging a fragrance by its opening is like judging a conversation by its greeting. The opening is real, but it is not the whole picture. A fragrance you dislike at first spray may become one you love as it settles — and the reverse is just as common.
When you try a fragrance, give it time. Notice how it changes from the opening to the later stages before deciding what you think of it.
Fragrance experience varies
The same fragrance can develop differently from one person to another, and even from one day to another. That variation is normal, and it is part of what makes fragrance personal. It is also why we describe our longevity commitment as a published promise — a clear standard we stand behind, with a money-back commitment if a fragrance does not meet it.
Reading notes when you shop online
When you cannot smell a fragrance first, the notes are your map. Treat them as a description of character rather than a promise of exact experience — two fragrances built around similar materials can still feel completely different.
If you want help translating notes into a choice, our Fragrance Guide walks through the basics. Every Arhan Scentiments fragrance is presented as Extrait de Parfum and offered in 50ml and 100ml, with concentration varying by fragrance.
